Happy New Year (For Some)

While on tour with NETworks, usually they have been good about providing for us on holidays. New Year's Eve is one of those holidays when the company usually opens up the proverbial pocketbook, and it looked like New Year's 2010 was going to be the same.

It was just going to be a party at the hotel bar with catering, but in the end that is usually okay because that means no driving or drunken cab rides. The problem started when someone in our company discovered that Cheyenne Jackson, a big Broadway performer, was going to be giving a New Year's Eve concert in a venue housed in the same complex as our venue. Naturally many of us were excited by the prospect of getting to see this concert and made arrangements to get tickets. Well given how vindictive our company manager was, this did not go over well. So a sign up sheet was posted on the call board and we had to choose between one or the other. Those who chose the concert were not then eligible for the magic drink tickets which the company was providing. This meant no free drinks for those people. I chose to be one of those people.

So was it worth foregoing a couple of free drinks at the Doubletree hotel by the Miami Airport to hear Cheyenne Jackson. Without a doubt! But sadly the pettiness did not end there. As soon as those of us who went to the concert returned to the hotel, the company manager ordered the remaining food to be taken away. In the end, it cost our company nothing for a few of us to go to the concert, but because some of us went out and did a more interesting thing, than what our manager was able to come up with, we therefore had to be punished. Sadly the night could have been a good schmoozing opportunity. The presenter at the Adrienne Arsht Center was there at the concert. While he was grateful we came, he was understandably incredulous at how ridiculous we concertgoers were being treated. Oh well!

At least I got another "the picture" with Nate!
