Golden Gate Theatre

San Francisco has a theatre district, but sadly it is very much a mixed bag. The theatre district is located in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco, which for those who have never been is an extremely run down and rather unsafe part of the city. Sadly though, this is where the theatres are, and you can't exactly move them out of the neighborhood they are located in. In fact when you go to a show there are uniformed security personnel surrounding the perimeter of the theatres. It is a bit unsettling. San Francisco has three main venues for its touring shows: the Orpheum, the Curran, and the Golden Gate. Of the three, the Golden Gate is sort of the ugly stepchild, and that is where Beauty and the Beast performed. Even though I was not playing, I could have made the effort to go backstage at the theatre and take some pictures of the house. After seeing the first performance though, I decided it was not really worth the effort. The interior of the theatre is pretty bland and really in need of refurbishment. I did snap a couple of shots in the lobby though.

If only the rest of the theatre has the sort of character that the lobby does.
