Grand Rapids

Before our weekend in Grand Rapids, I have had quite a bit of experience with the town. Mostly though it was just a place to drive through on the way north to go skiing in Michigan, but I have seen a show and a They Might Be Giants concert there before (not to mention the great mall!). That having been said, I have not spent much time in downtown Grand Rapids, and it turned out to be more fun than I remembered it. Alas that we were staying about 7000 miles away by the Grand Rapids airport!

Given our limited time and the distance of our hotel, I did not have time to really do much downtown including the art museum.

Back in the late 90s, I took a trip up to Grand Rapids to see the national tour of Dreamgirls at the DeVos Place. Now over ten years later our tour played at the same theatre.

The DeVos Place is actually a large complex including a theatre and convention center.

When I first walked into the pit, I remarked on how I did not really remember the theatre from my previous visit. I later learned that they had renovated the theatre at some point in between.

The theatre can light up in many different colors. The blue was chosen to match our production.

I had a great weekend in Grand Rapids, and would have no problem with returning in the future on another tour!
